If you never read the manual (you are not getting all you could from your programs):
(1) Drag a copy of PBTools from your WRITE PROTECTED master disk onto the System Folder in your PowerBook, respond “OK” when asked if you want PBTools put in your Control Panels Folder, and restart your PowerBook. (Or just drag PBTools directly into your Control Panels Folder, if you prefer). If you’re using an Extensions Manger, be sure you tell it to allow PBTools to load.
(2) Personalize your working copy of PBTools after you restart; the serial number is located on your master disk. You’ll only have to personalize your working copy of PBTools once.
(3) Store your WRITE PROTECTED master PBTools disk somewhere safe.
(4) Balloon help is provided throughout PBTools. Though balloon help can’t be as thorough as documentation provided in the printed manual, if you’re not going to read the manual, you can still get some help from PBTools’ balloon help. As a printed manual non-reader, you will find the balloon help for the PowerWatch menu indicator icon particularly informative; just turn balloon help on, and move the cursor to the PowerWatch menu title icon (the battery menu), and this is what you’ll see:
PBTools ships with almost all its preferences set the way most people will want them. Three preferences, however, are left unchecked, which is not the setting YOU may want. These preferences are unchecked so your PowerBook doesn’t behave in a different manner than usual, without you having any idea why. For example, most people will want to check “Ignore the Caps Lock down key” in the PBKeys section. From the ‘factory’, this feature is unchecked, because you might not realize why your Caps Lock key suddenly stopped working. Of course, if you were to read the manual or use PBTools Balloon help, you’d understand, but... In any case, most will want to check the checkboxes for the following items.
* If your PowerBook does not have an internal modem installed, the “Express Modem™ Sleep Watchdog” checkbox will be grayed and unavailable for checking, and the feature will be disabled (because it’s not needed). If your PowerBook has an internal modem installed, but it’s NOT an Apple Express Modem, checking the “Express Modem™ Sleep Watchdog” checkbox won’t hurt anything, although it’s unnecessary.
The remaining factory settings in PBTools are probably set the way you want, and shouldn’t need changing. Make sure you understand what effect changing a setting will have, BEFORE you change it. As always, you can refer to the printed manual or the online Balloon help, if you don’t understand a feature.
